March 2 - March 10, 2012

As some of you are aware, I will be away from March 2 to March 12.   The classroom will be under the very capable leadership of Mrs. Tenney.

My daughter, Lindsey, is a senior dancer with the Alison Lamont School of Dance and is performing with the Production group on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas.  All the dancers have been working very hard since September (and long before that!) to get ready for the performance.

If you have any questions during this time,  please contact Mrs. Tenney.  She will try to answer them for you.  From March 2-10 Mrs. Tenney will not test on Sight Words.  I will test the students March 12-14 when I get back.

Ant bullying?!

Umm that would be anti-bullying!  We do not condone the bullying of ants at Hillmond, lol!

February 13-17

HOJA was wonderful today!  The grade ones, and the whole school, really enjoyed their fabulous singing voices and the strong ant-bullying message.  Ask your child about the performance.  He or she should be able to tell you what is special about HOJA's singing (vocals only, no music or instruments) and some part of their anti-bullying message (tell someone you trust, help don't hurt, tell don't tattle).  A big Thank you to the SCC for helping bring HOJA to Hillmond again.

Tomorrow is RED DAY!  Bring a red snack and wear red!
Remember, if your child is skiing I need you to let me know.  Email or call the office in the morning.

Spelling test:  Congratulations to following students for achieving 100% this week!
Kali, Burke, Ainsley, Brooklyn, Nadia, Morgan, and Logan.  Well done!

Remember:  the lists are getting longer and harder so practice often!
Spelling rules this week:  Long vowel i sound with a silent e.  Also, if y is the only vowel in the word, the y says long i.

Unit #16 Words
1.  five
2.  time
3.  like
4.  dime
5.  ride
6.  nine
7.  my
8. by
9.  try

Have a good week!

Almost forgot spelling words!

Unit #15 - the units are getting harder so make sure to practice!  Words are also in agendas.

1. make
2.  came
3.  lake
4.  game
5.  shake
6.  ate
7.  tape
8.  come
9.  have

Of course, long vowel words with a silent e BUT remind them that come and have don't follow the rules!

Sight Word Testing

I have tested most of the Grade Ones on the first 100 Fry words (apples, suns, leaves and pencils).  The expectation for the March report card is:

  • 4 - Strong Grade Level Performance   90+/100 Sight words
  • 3 - At Grade level  - 75-89 Sight words
  • 2 - approaching grade level - 65-74 Sight words
  • 1 - experiencing difficulty with grade level material - 0-64 Sight words
I will be sending a copy of your child's sight word test home on Monday.  I will also be sending a package of cards for you to make sight words with.  Please practice all the sight words and especially concentrate on the ones that your child missed on the test.  Please note:  testing was done on a 2 second timing unless I indicated differently on your child's sheet.  This is sufficient time for recall but not time for sounding out.

I have not tested all the students at this time so I will send the class average on Monday as well.
The test for the report card will be March 12-15 so be sure to study lots before then!  I have given this information to you now so you can study over the February break as well.

Please concentrate on learning these first 100 now.  I will not test again on individual levels until after the March report card.  However, if you child has mastered these words (90+), you can continue practicing his or her next level of words.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Have a good weekend!

100th Day!

Actually, all week's been 100th Day!  The Grade One's had a great day counting their 100 Collections, making a 100 day snack, and completing 100 math activities.  We will continue to finish 100 Day math centers tomorrow.  Thanks very much for sending the 100 day collections!

Valentine's Day
This year the Grad 3-6's are skiing on Valentine's day and some Grade One students will be joining them with their parents.  We are going to have RED Day.  You can send Valentines as usual on Tuesday.  If your child isn't going to be here Valentine's Day, and you haven't already told me, please let me know.

We will make a Valentine's day snack in class and I will provide punch as well.  If you want to send a class treat you certainly can.

For RED day, the students should:
1.  wear something red of course!
2.  try to bring a red snack (strawberries, licorice, use your imagination!).  We will graph the red snacks.
3.  bring their Valentines!  We will hand them out in the morning.

I have Math centers that are all based on using candy conversation hearts so we will be completing this in the afternoon.
Phys.  Ed will also be focused on Valentines/Red activities.

Finally, tomorrow is sight word testing but I will be testing the students on the first 100th sight words.  I will be using this information to look for progress before the next reporting period in March when I will retest them again.
Sorry, I've been forgetting to blog but I'll try to do better!
