How is fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart going?  We  are be participating in Jump Rope for Heart on April 5th so please have fundraising in before then.  Thanks!

Easter Egg Decorating
We will be decorating eggs on Tuesday, April 3.  Please send 2 or 3 hard-boiled WHITE eggs.   The eggs need to be wrapped in paper towel and sent in a margarine container with a lid.  Please don't send in egg carton.  Thanks!

Social Studies Project

I guess I will have to update each section one at a time!

Social Studies – My Family Collage/PowerPoint

Dear Grade One Parents:

We are studying about very important people in our lives – Our Family!
The My Family unit gives the students opportunities to learn how families are alike, how families are different and how families change.  I will be making a family collage or power point myself to show to the students also.

Collage - Each student needs to make a collage or about his or her family.  I have sent the students home with a piece of paper.

Power point – for you techno parents!  It may be easier to put together a Powerpoint or DVD to show us!  Please make sure to work with your child if you choose to do this.  Discuss the pictures that are selected and what you could say about each photo.

This collage/power point could show some of the following things:

-who the people are in your family
-who lives in your house and who might live somewhere else
-where do you live?  Farm, acreage, village, etc
-activities your family enjoys together
-family traditions
-favorite foods, TV shows, games, etc
-your house, your pets
-vacation photos!

If you do not have photos, you and your child can draw pictures or use magazine pictures to represent the people in your family.

Please write your family name on the collage and label the people in the picture.  You can also write a caption about the events if you wish.  I have a attached an example of what your collage might look like.  I would like these to start coming back to school after the Easter Break and no later than the end of April please!

Thanks!      Mrs. Burzynski

Important Information - Oratory, Social Studies Project, Easter Egg coloring, Jump Rope for Heart

I've been reviewing the Blog stats and they aren't very good!  Please email me if you have read the Blog!  I'd appreciate knowing whose following it!  Thanks!

1.  Oratory:  I've sent a letter home and here is the information as well.

Thursday, May 17th, 2012
Time: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Grades: One, Two, Three and Four

Dear Parents:

Hillmond School will be hosting Oratory again this year for Grades One to Three.  Marshall School and Onion Lake will be coming to our Oratory this year.  Oratory is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn to memorize a poem and to speak in public!

Class Poem

We will be presenting a class choral poem called,  “Nobody Knows Where Our Bus Driver Goes”.  I will send a copy home next week to practice.  I want to learn the whole poem with the students first.

Individual Poems

Grade ones also present an individual oratory.   Please email or send a paper copy of the poem including author by Monday, April 16.  The individual poem is usually quite short – less than 10 lines.  I have listed a few web sites you can check out to see if there is a poem that your child would be interested in presenting.  They will need your help to select a poem at home and to practice it at home.   We are not able to practice individual poems at school often but I will occasionally ask the students to recite their poems and help them.  Most of the practice will need to be done at home.

Selecting a poem
Choose a poem that your child really likes.  Children at this age like humorous poems but please make sure it is appropriate (humorous but not rude).  It should be short with an easy rhythm to recite and remember.  Your child can use actions and lots of expression but cannot use props.

Another option, the many students have done, is writing their own original poem.  Your child can sit down with you, think of a subject they like (hockey, the beach, my brother, etc) and write a poem with you.  It doesn’t need to be a rhyming poem.

Preliminary Competition
This year there will be a preliminary competition within our school for each grade.  Then the 3 best poem presentations from each grade with compete Grade One’s from Marshall and Onion Lake.

I would like the students to have a poem selected by next Monday,April 16.
If you have any questions or need help finding a poem, please call me.

Thank you,
Mrs. Burzynski

If your child is not taking the bus!!!!!!

A reminder that if your child is NOT going on the bus after school, you must notify the school.
You can write a note in the agenda, send me an email or phone the school.
Otherwise, I will send your child home on the bus!

You child will not remember at the end of the day what they are supposed to do!  Also, for things like birthday parties, they want to go and then 'think' they have permission to go.

Please, the responsibility is on you, the parent, to communicate with me directly - not through an older sibling.

Thank you to those parents who always notify me!

March 12-16 Update

Well, it was hard to come back to winter after the wonderful Caribbean sun!  However, it was fabulous to be greeted with 15 big bear hugs!  I didn't miss the snow but I did miss my class!

We were very proud of our Canadian dancers and received lots of compliments on their dancing and also, on what nice girls they were!

A HUGE Thank you to Mrs. Tenney for all her great work with the students this week!  I knew she'd have a lot of fun!

Green Day (no, not the band!)
We will celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Thursday, March15 with a Green Day theme.  It would be great if the students could wear as much green as possible!  Also, please send something green for snack.  We will have a few activities to participate in such as graphing our green clothes and green snacks.

Finally, the students should still be wearing ski pants or splash pants.  It is very muddy and wet on the playground.
